How can we rekindle the Fire of Creativity and Ubuntu in Education Across Africa?
Re-imagining African Education
A Time of Educational Prophecy
We are asked to reimagine learning as something wholly different from what we’ve known. For too long, education has been an act of control. It has sought to tame curiosity, to repress playfulness, to mold us into beings who forget how to ask questions with wonder in our eyes, who forget how to speak to rivers and clouds, to listen to the teachings of plants. We are told to “grow up” and, in doing so, we abandon the sacredness of being sensitive to the world. The more we suppress our play and curiosity, the more we sever ourselves from the unseen magic that breathes in the land, from the cycles of life, decay, death, and regeneration. The more we sever, the more we numb ourselves to the poisons, to the toxins not just in the water and air but in our very way of being.

Project Defy
All mainstream education can achieve, is further global inequality, a serious lack of empathy, increasing mental stress and a complete absence of confidence among the people to make any positive change in the world. Our decentralised, bottom-up model of alternative education can change the ways we learn, and therefore the ways we live. No longer dependent on teachers, institutions and experts of all sorts who tell us what to do, we can experience and apply our own intelligence and will. We want to break free from the charade, and rediscover what education should mean for us. An education revolution is needed where one should be able DESIGN EDUCATION FOR ONESELF with help from a community of learners, in a creative and collaborative learning environment. We believe that everyone has an intellectual capacity and personal will to take charge of their own learning and create the best outcomes for themselves. Their motivation comes from the challenges they face, the needs they feel and the curiosities they experience, which makes them great educators for themselves.

EarthRise Collective
The Earthrise Collective is a space where the best of our myriad traditions meet and dance. With each step of this dance, each twist and turn, we co-create a new dance for these times. A new way of placing our feet, our hands, and our bodies on the ground. A new way of lifting ourselves up again. “The future can be changed. We are all brothers and sisters, the children of one father and one mother. Treat children and animals with kindness and pass this wisdom on to generations to come and I assure you there will come a time when our grandchildren, or our great grandchildren, will live in a world of beauty and harmony…Indaba.” — Baba Credo Mutwa

Kufunda Village
Kufunda is a learning centre and village, living our way into what it takes to create healthy vibrant community in Zimbabwe, and beyond. We are living the future that we each long for. Through this we are learning valuable approaches and practices for individual and collective health and well-being way beyond our village. We are discovering a great power in a community that collectively chooses to move towards health and possibility. Many of our community processes are built on a foundation of appreciation, celebrating the best of what is, and from there dreaming what may be possible as we build on these foundations. These very processes has built our village from initially a training centre, to be a place where we now have a biodynamic farm, a Waldorf inspired school, host regular women's and men's circles for ourselves and the wider community, are teaching and practicing eco-building, wood saving stoves, compost toilets and more more. We are 102 people living together on a 117 acre piece of land, with 109 children coming to school daily from our neighbouring community. Living the Future Today.

Reimagining Education through Socio-Eco Entrepreneurship and Local economies in Africa
-
At the heart of African wisdom lies Ubuntu: "I am because we are." This philosophy reminds us that wealth is not measured by individual accumulation but by the strength of our relationships, the vibrancy of our communities, and the opportunities we create for one another.
-
We are dreaming of economies that honor these truths—economies that are circular, regenerative, and deeply invested in entrepreneurship as a collective act of trust and solidarity. Imagine a community where the wealth of one is shared to uplift many. Seed funding is not merely financial but extends to mentorship, skill-sharing, and opportunities that ripple outward.
-
In Kufunda village, a farmer with ancestral knowledge of regenerative agriculture trains young people to restore the soil while growing abundant food. A mentor, seeing the potential, provides a small investment of tools and seeds. This act of trust not only births new livelihoods but regenerates the land for future generations.
-
khaya le Langa, founded by Tony Elvin in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, is a hub for social innovation that reimagines urban regeneration through grassroots engagement and community-driven entrepreneurship. It operates as a model of radically inclusive economies, addressing systemic inequalities in a South African township setting.
-
Our vision calls for alternative funding models rooted in care and reciprocity. These might look like micro-loans exchanged through informal stokvels, where trust serves as collateral. Or they might take the shape of mentorship programs, where experienced entrepreneurs provide skills and guidance, sowing seeds of knowledge for others to flourish.
-
To invest in this vision is to invest in life—where every resource shared returns to nourish the collective. Together, we are weaving an economy that mirrors the resilience of nature: interconnected, abundant, and thriving.
Let us grow this dream. What will you sow with us?

True education thrives when elders’ wisdom and children’s creativity come together. Elders hold the knowledge of the land, culture, and history, while children carry the future. By bridging these generations, we honor our past and empower the next to build a regenerative future. Together, they are the heart of transformation.
African Hub Council of Elders

Mabule Mokhine, a South African mathematician, embodies Ubuntu by using mathematics as a tool for empowerment and transformation. Through his work, he restores education by making math accessible and relevant to underrepresented communities, bridging gaps in knowledge and fostering collaborative learning. Mabule's approach intertwines problem-solving with collective growth, emphasizing that education thrives when it uplifts and connects everyone.
